In response to calls in the state legislature for an increase in the minimum wage, a rally in Ithaca, NY on March 12, 2012 calls for a "living wage" of $12.78 per hour, an amount that a single person can live on in Tompkins County working full-time, according to data published by the Alternatives Federal Credit Union periodically; as opposed to the minimum wage which is impossible to live on, even with proposed increases. The rally was organized by the Tompkins County Workers Center, tcworkerscenter.org. In this video clip, participants sing the old labor movement song, "Bread and Roses," at the close of the rally. 150 workers were gathered: "Our lives shall not be sweated from birth until life closes; Hearts starve as well as bodies; give us bread, but give us roses!" "Bread and Roses" is associated with the Lawrence Mass. Textile Mills Strike that occurred exactly 100 years ago.
