In ancient Japan, the skill of a swordsman was tested by rolling up Tatami mats, and then soaking them in water (to simulate the subtlely of human flesh) and then seeing how well the swordsmen could cut through it. The perfect cut results in the top half of the mat simply 'falling off' after the stroke has been completed. This is me cutting with a 400 year old $30,000 sword, that in all likelihood has probably killed a fair number of people.
