Bottled water is the only alternative for people in some parts of the world where there is no running water for drinking. That is the case in Mexico, which has grown to become the second biggest per capita consumer of bottled water after Italy. Multi national drinks concerns use the deep mistrust Mexicans feel about the public water supply to expand their trade in table water, which is little more than bottled tap water. Bottled water sells at more than 10 thousand times the cost of production. It's a licence to print money. And the result is that some poor Mexicans are paying a fifth of their income on drinking water.
