School is coming to a close for the year, and for one Independence school, it's closing for good.

Englewood Christian Academy has been teaching reading, writing, arithmetic and religion for 33 years.

But the school is closing because it's been losing students.

"It cost money. Every year, raise it a little more and you lose family members. So we decided it was probably best to close it while we're strong," principal Debbie Evans told KMBC's Donna Pitman.

"It's upsetting. I wish I could finish my last year here," junior Jordan Nash said. 

"To know it's the last time we'll see some of these families is very sad. It's heartwrenching," Evans said.

Englewood seniors will graduate Monday night. The final day of school is Friday.

Another faith-based school is closing its doors in Independence. Saint Ann's is closing for good after this school year.

A decade ago, it had nearly 200 students. Now, there are 53.

President George W. Bush held a summit earlier this year on faith-based schools, noting that they're closing at an alarming rate.

The Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph has hired a consultant to work on a master plan for new schools and new parishes in growing parts of the metro area.
