Enormous Fire Destroys 3800 Shops in Nigeria Market

An enormous fire has wrecked havoc in Kano, northern Nigeria after it burned down one of the region's largest markets - Sabon Gari - on Saturday night.

“It is unfortunate that from the record more than 90 per cent of the market has been burnt. “Base on the report, more than 3, 800 shops and quite a number of buildings were razed by the inferno,” said Sani-Sidi, the Director General of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

90% of the market was destroyed after the Nigerian fire brigade struggled to contain the fire. Over 1000 trucks are now at the site to clear away the rubble.

In a statement, the Nigerian Presidency said: “President Buhari shares in the pain of the victims knowing that the two fire incidents had created major setbacks for all those that had business outfits in the markets, thereby affecting the livelihood of their families and setting back economic activities in the states.”

Another market in Kano was burnt down in a similar inferno 3 months ago.
