Building the OSE HR Team

We are building an HR team based on the protocols borrowed from friends at the Rare Genomics Institute (http://raregenomics.org). Rare Genomics has 165 volunteers contributing an average of 10 hours per week - or the equivalent of about 40 full time people. These are not just any volunteers - but highly skilled professionals with full time jobs elsewhere - highly vetted and with cultural fit. That is impressive - all high performing organizations that I know of at this level - work with multimillion dollar staff budgets. What does it take? A high functioning Human Resources team. The key is expectations: that this is as serious as any job, with hiring and firing as in a regular business. And second: respecting contributors' time: that contributors are expected to perform so that effectiveness fuels proper motivation, and nobody's time is wasted.
