Second hike of the day was also in an area managed by The Nature Conservancy called the Bottom Creek Gorge Preserve. This preserve is located in the middle of the high elevation Blue Ridge Plateau south of Roanoke and features multiple rugged gorges unknown to the average hiker. Bottom Creek is quite a large creek, and the confluence with Goose Creek at the downstream end of the gorge forms the South Fork Roanoke River. This gorge is said to have some of the gnarliest kayaking whitewater in Virginia, and I believe it from the YouTube videos. The gorge is approximately 3 miles long and ranges from 300 feet deep near the upper end to 900 feet deep towards the lower end. You'll pass by The Kettles when you enter the gorge, a series of enormous rapids in succession. The highlight is the overlook for Bent Mountain Falls, said to be the 2nd highest waterfall in Virginia at 200 feet. I believe it is the tallest waterfall in Virginia. The lower freefall is 200+ feet alone, and using the topo is looks to be 340-370 feet high because Camp Creek is a continuous cascade above the lower drop. Either way it is an impressive sight from the overlook. Hike was 4.8 miles with 900 feet elevation gain in 2 hours.
