Pence praises HIV/AIDS-fighting program

(29 Nov 2018) Vice President Mike Pence paid tribute to PEPFAR, ahead of the World AIDS day, calling the program "the most extraordinary and successful American humanitarian initiative in history." Pence's comments came Thursday at the White House. The President's Emergency Plan For AIDS Relief or PEPFAR, is a program to combat the HIV and AIDS epidemic in Africa and elsewhere, started under former President George W. Bush 15 years ago. PEPFAR currently supports more than 14 million people with lifesaving antiretroviral treatment. That is up from just 50-thousand people on treatment when the program first started This also comes a day after House and Senate voted to reauthorize PEPFAR and President Trump is expected to soon sign it into law. "We're grateful for the strong and bipartisan support in the Congress for this extraordinary humanitarian effort by the American people," said Pence. "President Trump believes this reauthorization is a critical component of our administration's commitment to combat AIDS and it will build on the renewed energy and focus that the president has brought in our entire administration, have brought to this critical issue."
