Two Minute UVA Video Script: Ni hao... thank you all for the opportunity to introduce myself through this xuanchaunpian... My name is Jeff Gibson... And there are four reasons why I'll excel at this job... commitment... experience... geography... and vision... One, commitment... For the past fifteen years... all my adult life... I've devoted myself... in ways I could... to bridging the deficit of Sino-American understanding... As a Beijing based journalist... filing for CBS, Reuters, and other global media... As a strategic advisor and project director... at IHS International and at Georgetown University... serving a select stable of clients... And as a teacher... equipping the next generation of Chinese and Americans with the linguistic and cultural tools they need to collaborate... See... creating meaningful US-China exchange is my passion... the fire in my belly... I believe we are best... when we work together... when we find creative... multi-cultural... multi-disciplinary solutions that make one plus one equal three... in an era where my generation will have to do more with less... I can't think of a more urgent calling... So this is my mission... one I will continue... whether at UVA... my first choice... or at a local boarding school... my second choice... where I've been offered the opportunity to create an innovative Chinese program from the ground up... an exciting prospect... Two, experience... Many candidates offer bilingual fluency... many candidates offer deep China expertise... but I offer more... I've done what you seek to do... From 2005 to 2010... Georgetown University asked me to forge their China engagement strategy... I did... with the help of many others... because this was a team effort... not an individual one... Setting up and managing their Beijing Rep Office at the Changan Club... Guiding seven of President DeGioia's trips to China... and dozens of other cross- Pacific delegations for institutional stakeholders and partners... Facilitating faculty research leading to publication... Piloting a mid-career training program for senior Chinese leaders... raising several million dollars along the way... Convening regular academic conferences each year... And running the Globalization Initiatives Group... a vehicle for air-traffic control... and for communicating international activity between campuses... Three, geography... As a Charlottesville native... or a laotu fujinniya nongmin as I tell my Chinese pals... with deep ties to UVA... its China-focused faculty... and an appreciation for Jefferson's university... and its values... I can hit the ground running... As an American... a Virginian... someone who's eager to listen and learn more... but has a head start... an understanding of UVA's unique culture... You won't have to pay for me to relocate... wait for me to sell my house or car... for my kids to pick new schools... or to move my whole family... I am ready to start immediately... And I already have... Finally... four... vision... Having paid my 'China start up tuition' at Georgetown... I will hand you a detailed... five point plan for actualizing UVA's China energy... on day one... (a) Listen to campus stakeholders... a process I've already begun... (b) Analyze existing programs, their MOUs, and cross-Pacific best practices... again, a process I've begun by consulting veteran US university China reps... (c) Craft a clear strategic vision... driven by stakeholders... that links UVA's mission... with its goals for... and opportunities in... China... (d) Coordinate... by founding a globalization steering committee... much as I did at Georgetown... and... (e) execute... ambitiously but cautiously at first... mo shi guo he... crossing the river by touching the stones... flying out to China... opening a modest office... hopefully imbedded within an existing partner... containing costs, taxes, and liability... supporting existing initiatives... activating alumni networks... chalking up a few quick... modest wins... and generating revenue... likely through an ESL boot camp run back home for inbound Chinese... in collaboration, perhaps, with the Summer Language Institute... To recap... if selected... I will deliver... I will produce momentum with quick... easy wins... generate revenue... and position us for early success... Because... I've got the passion... I've got the experience... I've got the geography... And I've got the vision... To facilitate UVA's growth in China... Thank you ... again... for your consideration...
