In the early 1900s, tuberculosis was the leading cause of death in the #usa . A Delaware sanatorium (one of many) where patients were being treated needed to raise $300 to stay open. A doctor's volunteer cousin, Emily Bissell, who also happened to be a fundraiser, remembered something that had worked in Denmark and decided to try it in the United States: special stamps (similar to stickers, used to seal holiday cards and packages) called seals which were sold at the Post Office for one cent. Her idea was so successful that she and her group raised thousands of dollars to save the tuberculosis sanatorium. What began as a mission to save one sanatorium turned into an annual fundraiser for the American Lung Association. Today, Christmas Seals® remain one of the main supporters of the American Lung Association's mission to continue research including: lung cancer, COVID-19, asthma, air pollution, and secondhand smoke.

This footage shows Detroit, Michigan, Mayor John C. Lodge (Mayor 1922-1923, 1924, 1927-1929) purchasing Christman Seals from Sarah Montgomery Kanter, the daughter of Charles A. Kanter, President of Detroit Tuberculosis Sanatorium.
