Liberal doses of pirates and swimming pools on a journalist and cameraman's trip to Macau, which till 1999 was Europe's last remaining colony in China. Set in Macau, in graceful almost magical-realist style, Ivo M. Ferreira's film connects East and West and the politics of the present to its echoes in the past, paralleling the sinking of a 12th-century Portuguese galley and a Chinese junk, taking in some startling contemporary architecture along the way.
