In a candid admission, senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Abhishek Manu Singhvi today said former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru would not have been able to win Independence while the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, would not have been able to run the nation as its Premier.
Mr Singhvi made the statement while addressing a programme organised here. Senior Congress leader and former Union minister Salman Khurshid also presented his views on the occasion.

''We are fortunate that Gandhi came earlier and Nehru came later. Both had different blessings. No one other than Gandhi was capable of achieving freedom. On the other hand, Nehru created republic institutions in the country after Independence,'' he said.
Later, while addressing media persons, he clarified that he made the statement in the context of respective quality and experience possessed by the two great leaders. Besides, Mahatma Gandhi was already 80 years old at the time of Independence.
