D.O.G.S. Airshow 2008 (Giant Scale Radio Control Airplanes)

Normally when you say something is going to the dogs it means that things aren't good. But in Dayton, Ohio on Labor Day weekend going to the DOGS means some of the best RC flying around. In this case the DOGS are the Dayton Ohio Giant Scalers and the event is their annual Labor Day Weekend Fly-in, with 2008 being the 13th year for them to put this event on.The Half Time Shows were really interesting in that the DOGS did a good job of highlighting almost all aspects of the hobby including 3D, Precision Aerobatics, Warbirds, Turbines, Helicopters, Racers, and even small electric Foamies were represented. One thing that I did notice was that the show changed a little bit each day. The DOGS would add elements to the show as different pilots would arrive to the show. One of the more interesting aspects of the show to me was the Warbirds fly. With a B-25 and a B-17 in the center of the show the sky was filled above them with fighter escorts that included P-51's, P-47's, and many other fighters. The sound of those engines flying formations around the field was incredible. Several turbine engine planes like Ron Ballard's Embrear Tucano and Lewis Patton's F-18 Super Hornet were definitely crowd pleasers as they had the sky to themselves during the show. Bill Pirshel's Len Mount UH-1 Huey was so real and lifelike that you almost felt like you were in the jungle waiting for a "dust-off" as the choppers came in over the trees. Over all I would say that the DOGS did an outstanding job of putting the best face of this hobby forward to the public of Dayton, Oh.
