In June, ahead of an extraordinary official visit by an Israeli delegation to Bahrain, an official from the Gulf kingdom told i24NEWS that Bahrain would be the first Gulf nation to establish diplomatic relations with Israel.

'Bahrain does not view Israel as an enemy,' the official, who asked not to be named, told i24NEWS, adding that rapprochement between the two nations 'would not contradict the principles of Bahrain.'

Reports that Israel was working to normalize ties with Bahrain emerged hours after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that he would soon travel to unspecified Arab nations following a momentous visit to Oman in October.

'There will be more such visits in Arab countries very soon,' Netanyahu said in a press conference alongside Chadian President Idriss Déby who on November 25 became the first leader of the Muslim-majority west African nation to visit Israel since its establishment in 1948.

Netanyahu has led an unprecedented diplomatic push into the Gulf seeking more open ties with the Arab world.

In October, Netanyahu made a rare visit to Oman — an Arab state with which Israel has no diplomatic ties — and met with its leader Sultan Qaboos.

At a security conference in Bahrain following the visit, Oman’s foreign minister Yussef bin Alawi bin Abdullah also offered rare support for Israel.

'Israel is a state present in the region, and we all understand this. The world is also aware of this fact and maybe it is time for Israel to be treated the same and also bear the same obligations,' Bin Alawi bin Abdullah was quoted by Reuters as saying at the event.
