Local Government Reform Still High On The Agenda

Local Government Reform is still high on the agenda of this government and the Minister responsible for the drive is assuring that reform will bring goods and services closer to every family across the country.

Minister Haji Kazim Hosein told the 2nd Caribbean Regional Conference of the Commonwealth Local Government Forum (CLGF) that the Municipal Corporations have been taking action to build capacity and deepen their ties with civil society to provide a strong foundation for the reform legislation.

Minister Hosein took the opportunity to share the progress of Local Government Reform in Trinidad and further underscored the importance of championing the reform in Trinidad

The Minister also briefed attendees on the partnership projects with the CLGF that have begun in three Municipal Corporations to localize the SDGs. 

For Sangre Grande, it was the tourism app, in Port-of-Spain, it is a proposal for a walkability project in the business district in partnership with the Blind Welfare Association and the National Centre for Persons with Disabilities and in the Penal/Debe Regional Corporation, a study was done on expansive soils that are common to the region which makes it susceptible to land shifting. 

Minister Haji Kazim Hosein reaffirmed his commitment to empowering local government bodies and elected representatives so that they can continue to put people first and be the strongest advocates for, and agents of, development at the local level.
