(12 Dec 2018) President Donald Trump signed an executive order Wednesday aimed at coordinating the efforts of 13 federal agencies to bolster the Opportunity Zones program targeting development in distressed American communities.
The order establishes the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council, which will be led by Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson.
The program is part of the 2017 tax reform law, offering tax benefits for developers and investors to build in long-neglected areas.
Speaking at the White House before signing the measure, Trump hailed the order as a way for all U.S. communities "regardless of ZIP code have access to the American dream."
Trump said the resources of the entire federal government "will be leveraged to rebuild low income and impoverished neighborhoods that have been ignored by Washington in years past."
Trump's daughter and close adviser Ivanka Trump attended the event, but neither commented on an Associated Press investigation that examined her promotion of the program despite investments held by her husband, Jared Kushner, that could benefit from the plan's tax breaks.
