Gibraltar MP reacts to UK's withdrawal agreement with European Union

(26 Nov 2018) A Gibraltan politician said on Monday the dispute between Britain and Spain over the Brexit agreement turned out to be "something of a storm in a teacup". The Spanish government had threatened to veto the divorce deal between Britain and the European Union, which was sealed this weekend, over sovereignty of the territory. Spain claims Gibraltar even though it was ceded to Britain in 1713. Gibraltan MP (member of parliament) Marlene Hassan Nahon said the dispute had caused "a lot of havoc" but the territory's sovereignty was never in jeopardy. Hassan, the daughter of the late Chief Minister Of Gibraltar Sir Joshua Hassan, said the territory stands "very British" and suggested Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez may have been "playing to the gallery" to gain favour at home.
