When World War I ended on 11/11/1918, that was declared "Armistice Day" and Americans started commemorating it in 1919 to honor WWI veterans. On 11/11/1922, Harrisburg dedicated its "doughboy" statue to honor the local men who fought. By 1954, President Eisenhower signed a law that changed the name to Veterans Day to honor all military veterans, not just WWI vets. (Video by Mark Pynes/PennLive)
