"Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty." Everyone seeks freedom. Especially in the West, freedom is the highest virtue, and it is sought after by all who are, or consider themselves to be, oppressed. But freedom in Christ is not the same as political or economic freedom. In fact, some of the most harshly oppressed people in history have had complete freedom in Christ. The Bible tells us that, spiritually speaking, no one is free. In Romans 6, Paul explains that we are all slaves. We are either slaves to sin or slaves to righteousness. Those who are slaves to sin cannot free themselves from it, but once we are freed from the penalty and power of sin through the cross, we become a different kind of slave, and in that slavery we find complete peace and true freedom. Although it seems like a contradiction, the only true freedom in Christ comes to those who are His slaves. Slavery has come to mean degradation, hardship, and inequality. But the biblical paradigm is the true freedom of the slave of Christ who experiences joy and peace, the products of the only true freedom we will ever know in this life. There are 124 occurrences in the New Testament of the word doulos, which means “someone who belongs to another” or “bondslave with no ownership rights of his own.” The price of freedom and liberty is very high, to important to simply give up for radical causes. Sermon text. "The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed: Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the flock. And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away. Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you." 1 Peter 5:1-7 When America’s Founding Fathers gathered in Philadelphia in the Summer of 1787 to write a Constitution for the United States, they were undoubtedly and collectively under the guidance of the Creator, from whom they acknowledged as the grantor of all human rights and the Blessings of Liberty. As they worked tirelessly and with great diligence to hammer out a framework for a government “ of, for and by the people “ the checks and balances, the Federal system of divided government between states and national authority, with three distinct and separate governmental branches, was in large part to prevent dangerous concentration of too much power in the hands of those governing the people by their consent. A dangerous condition the founders were structuring government to prevent was what they termed, the “ Tyranny of the Majority “. To undertake highly important actions, such as to amend the Constitution, to enact treaties, to impeach and convict the President or other high ranking officials of high crimes, to override a veto, or any action that might have far reaching ramifications or adverse effects on the hard won liberties of the people, the “ checks and balances “ were also designed to make it difficult to fundamental or sweeping changes, simply in rapid response to the momentary popular will of the citizenry “ en masse “. Thus our founders were preventing the emergence of “ Tyranny of the Majority “ to tread upon the rights of the minority. Some 228 years later, in A.D. 2015 America, our Founding Fathers would undoubtedly be horrified by the unspeakable evils perpetrated in recent history, shredding and desecrating the Republic, its Constitution, its institutions, its Christian base of natural and moral law, and the liberty of its people. They would firmly conclude, however, that it is not the failure of our American Constitution or the framework of our government that is destroying this Republic. Gay Fascist Rather, they would conclude that it is the deplorable wickedness of those elected or appointed to high office and dishonored their positions of public trust and discarded the rule of law. In their evil and ruthless attacks, that threaten to destroy the American Republic and thereby destroy the liberty of her people, recent American governments, and the Obama administration most of all, cling to and consolidate power by catering to small groups of unelected, “special interests.“
