Folk arts scholar  Dr M.V. Vishnu Namboodiri was formerly the Chairperson of Kerala Folklore Academy. In this conversation with Dr Jayaram Poduval, he talks about Theyyam, one of the performing rituals of North Kerala. He draws parallel with other rituals like Thira and Bhoota Kolam, and talks about the thottam songs used in Theyyam. He discusses the traditional performing communities and the innovations each of them has brought in costumes and make-up. Dr Namboodiri emphasizes that Theyyam is not just a primitive worshipping system and that classical Hinduism did have a powerful impact on it.
