The National Take a Stand Festival Orchestra concert on July 14, 2018, at Walt Disney Concert Hall was the culminating event of a ten-day festival where 140 young musicians from 36 El Sistema-inspired programs learned from a world-class faculty of master teaching artists. During the festival, participants attended masterclasses and private lessons with LA Phil musicians, engaged in peer mentorship, and participated in chamber music ensembles, as well as full orchestra rehearsals. The festival coincided with the Take a Stand Symposium and Teaching Intensive, which gathered more than 200 leaders, teachers, researchers, and key stakeholders from around the world with a vested interest in the El Sistema movement and progressive practices in music education. Under the direction of Los Angeles Philharmonic Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel, Michael Morgan, and Jeff Grogan, the orchestra performed works by Bernstein, Sibelius, and Shostakovich, presented with original videos created over the course of the festival to an audience of Take a Stand attendees, friends, families, and supporters.
