Early voting for local elections underway

Several elections that will impact local government and education are on the November 7 election ballot. In addition to voting for seven proposed changes to the Texas constitution, elections for Calallen ISD, London ISD, the City of Robstown, the City of Alice and Alice ISD are underway. 


Schools

Calallen ISD taxpayers will vote to pass or kill a $39.5 million bond to build a new elementary school, construct a new science wing and provide $1.5 million for an industrial arts facility. Bond dollars would also be used to provide for general improvements to district and campus roadways and parking lots, athletic facilities and school buildings. The new elementary school would pull students from Wood River Elementary and East Elementary, which serve kindergarten through third grade students.

London ISD is also holding a bond election. The district has put up for taxpayer consideration an $18 million bond that would fund a new elementary school and a new gymnasium - capable of hosting competition sports.

Alice ISD is holding a tax ratification election. The district proposes to move $0.06 from the Interest and Sinking Fund, which is used to pay down debt, into the Maintenance and Operations Fund. The successful tax ratification would generate an additional $750,000 which the district has earmarked specifically for teacher salary increases to help with staff retention. The measure would provide for a $1,500 raise for all teachers and a $750 raise for all other staff.
