Turkish FM on Khashoggi, US sanctions on Iran

(6 Nov 2018) Turkey's Foreign Minister on Tuesday said his country does not believe orders to kill Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi came directly from Saudi Arabia's King Salman. Speaking to journalists at Japan's National Press Club in Tokyo, Mevlut Cavusoglu said Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was "pretty sure" that King Salman had no involvement in the murder, citing "personal confidence" between the leaders during two recent phone calls. Cavusoglu's comments came after The Washington Post recently published an opinion column about the Khashoggi case written by Erdogan. Cavusoglu also said that more evidence exists in the ongoing investigation, which has not been shared with the public. He added that Turkey shares all information with Saudi Arabia's working investigations group. His comments came after a top Saudi human rights official reiterated his government's "regret and pain" over the death of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Speaking at a regular review of the kingdom's record by the UN's top human rights body, Bandar bin Mohammed al-Aiban, the president of the Saudi Human Rights Commission, emphasised that the monarchy had ordered an investigation to "bring the perpetrators to justice in order to bear the fact to the public". During the news conference in Tokyo on Tuesday, the Cavusoglu also commented on recent United States sanctions imposed on Iran. Cavusoglu said that Turkey opposes the sanctions and is hoping for meaningful dialogue and compromises, stressing that his country had communicated to the US that cornering or isolating Iran would be unwise.
