The one thing the game does not explain is exactly how people are turned into monsters by the Moon Crystal/Lunasystem if they're not already dead. Maybe it kills them in the process? I guess Count Crimson has  managed to focus the power in a particular way since he doesn't appear to be undead and Merle wasn't either when he attempted to use the Lunasystem on her.
