Ever wondered how a Battlefield map progresses throughout development? Here is one example of a map from Battlefield 1 named Verdun Heights from the They Shall Not Pass DLC. This map was developed within 5 months by 4 DICE devs. DICE has said that often start with height map data from satellite images. Basically the same tech Google Earth is using just more high res for us. DICE don't always use the exact location but rather one that fits their vision. That’s why maps look almost like real life locations. Especially terrain. No one can sculpt terrain like mother nature does it with a little help from 3D applications. DICE will either use satellite data or algorithms that construct and calculate terrain based on erosion and weather data. Using space tech for making games! Gotta love technology. While I personally think that 5 months is a long time to create just one map, Matt(DICE) has said that 5 months is actually fairly short for a map. Normally they need 6-7 months. Most of the 8 base maps from Battlefield 5 took up to a year to complete. The‘Devastation’ map for example, was 13 month in development and 6 people worked on it! They need to consider the size, details, balance, gamemodes, playtesting, etc. ☛ If you liked this please Like, Comment and Subscribe for more, similar content!
