Let's Quickly Play Sink King, a MSX game competing in the MSXdev04 programming contest. MSXdev is a great initiative that originally had the goal to "celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the creation of the MSX standard". At the time MSX2 was dominant in the scene, as most games that were still being developed, focused on MSX2. The MSXdev competitions eventually ended up being so successful for the MSX(1) popularity, that nowadays the majority of games for our beloved homecomputer system seem to be for MSX instead of MSX2. In 2004 the second edition of MSXdev was held. Since MSXdev03 was cancelled, all donations for that contest were added to the fund for MSXdev04 instead. While MSXdev03 had only 3 submitted entries, the 2004 edition got 16 finished submissions! I'm planning to be playing through all of the MSXdev games during an non-narrated Let's (Quickly) Play MSXdev Games series. After Daniel Vik's Yahtzee, Dioniso's Penguin Race, and CEZ GS's Teki Paki, it's now Sink King's turn, winner of the MSXdev04 contest! Guzuta Raster Leisure aka Madonna Mark 2 aka Futuremare delivered a wonderful arcade worthy MSX game in the form of an 8 KB ROM and is available for download from http://msxdev.msxblue.com/?page_id=75#. It features fresh sound effects, initial hardware diagnostics and notices (as suits an arcade game) and can be played by 1 or 2 players with keyboard or joystick (though unfortunately not simultaneously). Sink King is inspired by the Atari 2600 VCS game "Fast Food" and can be played in PAL and NTSC mode. I stuck to PAL, since I didn't want the audio of the video recording to get out of sync. In Sink King, you play Fierce Brushnan, "the bravest washing brush of the United Sinkdom -with licence to rinse-". His important mission is to wash all the utensils of the world's eight most renowned kitchens. Be careful though! Fierce's infamous arch enemy, Halt Cherry, is reported to have sabotaged the kitchens with poisonous containers that look like dishwasher soap! Your goal in the game is to wash 32 utensils in every kitchen/round, while avoiding the poison containers and making sure you keep your soapometer as full as possible; you can't clean your plates without soap, now can you? Bonus points can be obtained by picking up random food (I've heard the grapes are especially tasty!); but be sure not to waste any soap on them! Plates, cutlery, pans and other utensils fly from left to right through the kitchen, and you have to hit or hold your brushbutton to scrub them clean. Scrubbing costs extra soap, and as you wait, your soap will drain slowly as well. Accidentally grabbing a poison container kills your foam and surely drains your soapometer, while grabbing green (25%), blue (50%) and red (100%) soap bottles replenishes your soapometer with the given percentage. Be careful, the blue and especially the red bottles are fast! At the end of each round, your remaining soap is added to your score counter. Washed utensils add 50 points, food adds 200, 400, 800 or 1600 points and soap bottles add 100 points. If you beat the 'king skore' of 30.000 points, you get a bonus 'Brushnan'! I had quite some fun playing this game, as it's quite addictive! I'll probably be trying to beat the game and clean those 8 kitchens in a later video! It would've been nice if there'd been an indicator of the remaining utensils for each round though, just like a co-op or competitive simultaneous playing mode would've been a cool feature. Not sure how feasible it is, but some more music, especially while playing the game, would've been appreciated as well. As usual, this recording was made using the cross-platform open source MSX emulator openMSX. For more information, see the official openMSX project page at http://openmsx.sourceforge.net/ This recording was made with 0.8.1 Development Build 12178, available from http://openmsx.fixato.net, home of the unofficial development builds of openMSX for Mac OS X and Windows x86 & x64. I used the Boosted MSX2 EN configuration for this recording, though it also runs on a plain MSX1.
