Otitis in dogs, an inflammation of the ear canal, is a very common pathology. It is usually one of the main causes of a visit to the veterinarian. This is why it is very important to learn to recognize otitis in our dog and to prevent its appearance.

The causes can be very varied, among them we can highlight:

    Foreign bodies: in spring and summer this is one of the most frequent causes of otitis. Foreign bodies, such as spikes, get into the ears of our dogs.

    Mites: it is a very frequent cause of otitis. Especially in young animals.

    Fungi: normally, otitis caused by fungi, have as their main cause a yeast called

    Allergies: Dogs with food allergies, or skin allergies, often have ear problems. Otitis can be the first symptom of allergy.
   
Although the causes can be non-infectious, they almost always tend to have ear infections, as an infection secondary to the problem. There are also some predisposing factors that make certain dogs are more prone to suffer otitis:

    Morphology of the ears: The dogs that by their race have the fallen ears and long, have more tendency to suffer otitis. In these dogs, the ears have less ventilation and more humidity, which creates an ideal environment for the development of bacteria.

    Improper cleaning of the ear: using swabs frequently to cleanse the hatred of our dogs may predispose them to suffer otitis. The swabs push the wax and create a stopper in the bottom.

    Frequent baths or without precaution: when we bathe our pet we must take care that water does not enter the ears. If they remain moist, it is often possible that they may have otitis.

Among the most frequent symptoms of otitis, we can highlight:

    Shake the head frequently
    Scratching your ears or keeping them porridge
    Tilt your head to one side
    Ear wax increase
    Excessive discharge that can go from yellowish to black
    Rotten smell
    Hearing loss in severe cases.

The treatment is something that must be prescribed by a veterinarian. Depending on the causes that cause the otitis. The best we can do is prevent the occurrence of otitis with a few simple tips:

    Do not use swabs to clean.
    Do the cleaning with care, and not introducing anything that could damage the ear.
    Use specific cleaners to maintain the hygiene of the ears.
    Pay special attention so that water does not enter the ears at bath time.
    Check the ears after a field trip. Thus, we can prevent that no foreign body is introduced and produce an infection in your ears.
