Most of us are aware that matter can exist in the three classical states of matter (solid, liquid, gas) but there are more states. One of them being the plasma state. If matter is in the plasma state then it typically becomes electrically conductive and lightning and the sun are natural phenomena where occurs. It turns out that plasmas can be used in many ways to create technology with which one can create and destroy chemical species and also potentially generate clean energy. By understanding plasmas we can create technologies that can be helpful to create a more sustainable world. Menno Lauret has a background in mechanical engineering and a PhD in control of nuclear fusion plasmas. He worked on fusion plasma physics in Europe and the United States and is currently working on developing  applications of plasmas that can replace polluting methods.
