Trondheim, Norway | 11-04-2010, 21:20UTC Once again, we got a short burst of Northern Lights. Didn't have the time to seek a nice spot so I took some photos and this video from the balcony. This is really just a test. I wanted to see whether it was possible to film auroras and it seems it might be possible after all! Unfortunately, the flickr video codec seems to swallow some detail here... The problem essentially is that they tend to be quite dark. This is shot at ISO12800, f/1.4 and 1/30s. The problem is that it shows a lot of noise. To get rid of that I did the following: downsize (by a factor of 9 which gives me about three stops) and temporal averaging (I chose to "motion blur" with a width of 1s to average out the noise). This worked quite well as auroras usually don't change that fast. You can still se a fair amount of banding noise from the ISO12800 which I can't get rid of by averaging because it's not stochastic. Anyway, hope this helps me on the long road to decent aurora filming ;)
