Flake: Trump's words about journalists matter

(11 Oct 2018) Arizona Republican Senator Jeff Flake is concerned that President Donald Trump's attacks on the media are being used by "despots and authoritarians everywhere to suppress their own dissent." While the Senator, who has come out before against the president's attacks on the media, stopped short of blaming him for the possible murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, he did say Trump "has to be careful about what he says and continually using the (term) 'enemy of the people.'" He also said that if the U.S. finds out that Saudi Arabia and its Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman were involved in the murder of Khashoggi, the close ties that the Trump administration has cultivated with the Saudis would be inappropriate. U.S. lawmakers have increased pressure on the Trump administration to punish the kingdom over the disappearance of a journalist who lived in the United States. South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham said the president has been right to develop close ties with Saudi Arabia, but "when an ally puts you in a box like this, then you have to act decisively and I intend to." Yet some said there shouldn't be a rush to judgment. Louisiana Republican Sen. John Kennedy said, he thinks "it's important in this situation that we don't overreact or underreact." A few Code Pink demonstrators, a woman-led group which often protests in the halls of Congress, could be seen walking through senate offices on Thursday wearing "Where's Jamal?" signs.
