The Panel 3 discussion, For the People: How to Make Body Computing Work in the Real World, was moderated by Ed Saxon, producer at Ed Saxon Productions. Panelists were Tucker Viemeister, lab chief at Rockwell Group; Maja Mataric', director of the Center for Robotics & Embedded Systems and senior associate dean for research at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering; James Mault, director of the Health Solutions Group at Microsoft, Inc.; and Garry Neil, vice president of the Corporate Office of Science & Technology at Johnson & Johnson. Mr. Saxon led a diverse group of panelists in a discussion of how best to present the powerful and revolutionary capabilities of body computing to the end users: the healthcare provider and the patient. A key point was that patients have a right to their health information, and efforts such as Dr. Maults HealthVault project are going a long way towards making this a reality. However, the needs of the patient differ greatly depending on the circumstance, and it is important that the healthcare interface with which patients interact cater to those variable needs. For example, Mr. Tucker has helped design childrens hospitals with the design layouts created from the eye level perspective of a child, and Dr. Mataric' has developed specially configured non-threatening robots to interact with autistic children. Dr. Neil spoke about the importance and commitment of large companies like Johnson & Johnson to engage in this space.
