Japan's new £192billion ($244billion) defence plan will upgrade existing helicopter carriers for US jets. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe wants his forces to be able to launch stealth fighters as he voices 'strong concerns' over China. As part of a separate proposal the Japanese say they are looking to acquire 42 Lockheed Martin F-35 stealth fighter jets. Critics say the latest moves contradict Japan's pacifist post-WWII constitution. 'We will secure both the quantity and quality of defence capability that is necessary... to meet the rapidly changing security environment,' Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told a regular press briefing on Tuesday.
