https://www.facebook.com/lancedailymusic https://lancedaily.bandcamp.com/album/discordium-3-beyond-thunderdome Lance Daily is an experimental/alternative solo project based out of Rochester, NY. I was contacted in April of this year in regards to doing a cover/interpretation of the Swans tune "Sensitive Skin". I wrote my parts while on tour with Darkest Hour in Europe. Mutha%$#&in MICHAEL MANRING is on bass--a favorite of mine--and Etienne LaFlamme on keys. This cover/interpretation was originally part of a full-length record entitled 'Excrescent Persona,' and was later repurposed for inclusion on 'Discordium 3: Beyond Thunderdome.' The original is very 'jammy' and has a distinct vibe, although with what sounds like a loose arrangement. I attempted to play off of these aspects and take them into further absurdity. From a top-down perspective, my initial ideas were to bookend the intro and outro on two contrasting ride cymbals (the right is a custom 21" K Heavy--its video debut!--instead of my usual right-side crash) and play the bridge on the china, which is performed on the ride in the original. From there it was more so about inducing those little idiosyncrasies to make the fill-ins, etc. my own. Side note, but I also taped a towel onto my kick drum batter head for less attack; I loved the sound but my beaters were eating through it within minutes, prompting me to finish up quickly. The snare is my 5x14 Sensitone maple with a Black X head. Notes: 1:50 - what better way to introduce the vocals than an over-the-bar fill-in that takes up half of the next bar? 2:17 - 8th quintuplet fill-in 2:32 - another over-the-bar fill 3:02 - crescendoing two-handed press roll to segue into bridge (room mics automate to increase in volume for bridge) 3:26 - snare+china crescendo, building into a sudden mute on downbeat 3:50 - 3:56 - interesting sequence that moves from 8th quints to 8th septs to 16th 9-tuplets 4:43 - blast is 16th sextuplets, 16th quintuplets, straight 16ths, then 8th triplets 5:06 - yet another over-the-bar fill 5:09 - 5:17 - snare+crash crescendo into a pretty wacky fill-in sequence that drops into the only appearance of a straight 2&4 groove in the song outro - lots of interesting syncopations, some challenging coordination stuff; improv starts around 6:14 If you'd like to purchase an isolated drum movie for this, please visit: http://travisorbin.bigcartel.com/product/tunes Full drumset transcription: http://travisorbin.com/images/LanceDaily-SensitiveSkin(TheNewFlesh).JPG Tempo = 135 BPM http://www.travisorbin.com
