Providing healthy meals daily can be a struggle for some families across the nation, even right here in the Coastal Bend. Now that Hurricane Harvey has left widespread devastation across the area, coming across those meals can be even harder. One non-profit is taking the steps to help those families with their food insecurities.

Kids Against Hunger (KAH) is a non-profit humanitarian organization that strives to provide a stable, nutritional base from which families can move from starvation to self-sufficiency.

Here in the Coastal Bend, KAH is hosting multiple events for volunteers to help pack these meals to be sent to The Food Bank of Corpus Christi. The Food Bank of CC will then distribute the meals as needed.

St. Mark's Lutheran Church, located at 4620 S. Alameda, is the official site of KAH in the Coastal Bend. Today, KAH is expecting over 150 adult and children volunteers to help pack more than 15,000 meals at the church. According to a KAH official, they expect to deliver 70,000 meals to The Food Bank of Corpus Christi today. Monday's packing event ends at 1 p.m.

Each packaged meal includes rice, soy, seasonings and a multi-vitamin substitute that will feed at least six people.

Bea Hanson, executive director of the Food Bank of Corpus Christi, says these meals help tremendously when it comes to the elderly population who may only receive a hot meal once a day.

"This food will be very good for the long term," Hanson said, "we are taking care of immediate needs but this will be good for the long term."

On Thursday, September 7, the KAH from Omaha, Nebraska will arrive with over 1 million meals that have been packed for our area.

On Sunday, September 10, the "Lutheran Day of Service," St. Mark's will host another packing event at 1:30 p.m.
