(5 Dec 2018) Communities in Poland and throughout the coal region voiced their commitment with COP24 discussions on climate change, but warned officials that a 'just transition' should be a top concern. Speaking at the event in Katowice, Marta Anczewska of WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) in Poland said insufficient jobs would be the biggest problem. "This is really a big challenge if we are talking about providing conditions for a just transition because if the lack of workforce continues, then we can expect that investors will stop flushing in and the economic situation might change," she said. Many villages and cities have seen unemployment numbers rise and local economies shrink, with coal mines and factories being abandoned progressively towards what has been consider cleaner and more sustainable energy for the planet. The mayor of a town in Bulgaria also expressed to a small audience how worried she feels about her community and what and how much more should be done in terms of investment to help former coal workers transition to new jobs and for her region to flourish again. Activists believe the transition cannot stop as time is already running out, but also agree that the involvement of the communities most directly affected should be as important.
