Available on DVD through www.umbrellaent.com.au In this celebrated film about a film, a once-respected but hopelessly out-of-touch director, Rene Vidal (Jean-Pierre Leaud - The 400 Blows), lures Hong Kong action star Maggie Cheung (2046, In theMood for Love) playing herself - to Paris to star as IrmaVep, the latex-clad jewel thief of the silent film serial Les Vampires. Maggie soon discovers that Rene is scorned by the staff and cast on the chaotic set, and she herself is soon shunned for her inability to speak French. But when Rene suffers a mental breakdown, and Cheung is fired by a new director, she decides to honour Rene's vision and take her character to the streets, making life imitate art. In the tradition of Fellini's 81/2, this hip cult classic from acclaimed French director Olivier Assayas (Summer Hours) is a witty, playful meditation on the perils and joys of filmmaking, and features excellent performances from Cheung and French cinema icon Jean-Pierre Leaud.
