A retort is a method for pipe cleaning which uses heated alcohol to remove tars and oils from the stem, shank, and bowl. This removes ghosts and "sweetens" the pipe, restoring a neutral flavor. This can be done every few weeks or months, depending on your smoking frequency. I tend to give my pipes a thorough cleaning once weekly during heavy smoking, with a retort or sweetening treatment every couple months. Catch a fish, feed a man for a day. Teach a man to smoke a pipe and to hell with it - he'll sit around making dumb YouTube videos all day.
