It's needed to get from the left to the right side without taking damage, as well as getting that last red coin. You have to be fast as the cloud does despawn rather quickly. Aside from that, another big part of this puzzle was figuring out how to get through doors with the spike shellmet. The P-Switch door requires i-frames and the key door requires you to drop the cannon.
