The records for Scotney Castle go as far back as 1137 when Lambert de Scoteni was the lord of the manor. However it was Roger Ashburnham who built the castle in the final quarter of the fourteenth century. He located it in the valley of the River Bewl. The round towers were fashionable at the time although only one, the Ashburnham Tower, still remains. A Catholic family, the Darrells, owned the property at the time of the reformation. They built a priest hole in it to hide Catholic priests and this is still there. Since 1970 the National Trust has administered the property.
