(30 Sep 2018) LEADIN: Iraqi students are heading back to school to start a new academic year. The Education Ministry says there's been an upsurge in class numbers. STORYLINE: It's back to school for these students arriving for the first classes of the academic year. The long summer holidays are over and it's time to get back to studying. Armed guards patrol outside Baghdad's Quraish school as pupils gather for assembly. The first day back is marked with a traditional flag-raising ceremony. Quraish school headmaster, Abdulkareem Jaber says: "We hope that this year will be a year of success, progress and security for all students." The Education Ministery says this academic year has seen an upsurge in class numbers, despite ongoing difficulties such as power outages and lack of water. Teachers and pupils have appealed to the government to work towards easing the hardships facing them and establishing security and stability so that they can get on with their studies. Hussein Ali Nasser, General Manager at the Education Ministry, says: "We defeated Daesh (Islamic state group), it's gone forever. Today, all efforts must be directed to elevating the educational system". A safe return to school, allowing children to lead normal lives.
