On February 1, 1960, four, black college students attending North Carolina Agricultural and Technical College in Greensboro, North Carolina, took a potentially dangerous and emotionally-decisive decision: to stage a non-violent sit-in on lunch counter seats at a traditionally "whites only" section in a Woolworth's store in downtown Greensboro. What they called their "simple" act changed civil rights history. Fifty years later, Professor Mimi Mann assigned her two EN101 (college-level) English classes in the fall of 2009 an Extended Definition Essay: define Social Justice by studying the lives of the four students and the objects they made famous, a section of the lunch counter from the Greensboro sit-in and the four seats they occupied, which are on permanent display in the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History on the Mall in Washington, D.C. The assignment was part of the Smithsonian Faculty Fellowship Program, a cooperative effort between the Paul Peck Humanities Institute at Montgomery College in Montgomery County, Maryland, and the Smithsonian Center for Museum Studies in Washington, D.C. This video tells the story of the journey of these four students, known as the Greensboro Four, and the journey Professor Manns' students took as part of the anniversary celebration to honor the 50th anniversary of the Greensboro Four and the sit-in that changed history.
