Rhythms underlie everything we do, from walking to talking to interacting with others. Because they have regular timing, rhythms enable our brains to organize incoming information and predict when important content in speech and musical streams is likely to occur. In this fascinating discussion-demonstration, Dr. Laurel Trainor details how rhythms are encoded in the brain, how music and rhythms affect attention and learning from the earliest days of life, and the relation between timing deficits and developmental disorders. In addition, she demonstrates the importance of rhythmic movements for optimal social development. Joined by Dr. Joanne Loewy, board certified music therapist, and others to be announced to use music, movement, and music therapy interventions with at-risk infants and children with disabilities. Loewy also explores how these same principles can enhance cooperation in adulthood. The session will feature a special performance by musicians of the DC Youth Orchestra.
