(8 Nov 2018) With the results of a key US Senate race still in question, Arizona officials are still counting more than 600,000 remaining ballots cast in Tuesday's election. Republican Martha McSally led Democrat Kyrsten Sinema by just about 17,000 votes as of Thursday, but the cliffhanger could last days or weeks as officials pour over early ballots across the state. In Maricopa County alone, the state's most populous, officials said they had about 472,000 ballots to count. "We know there's urgency out there but look, we're trying to get it right, not quick, and so that's my priority because that I think is much more important," said Maricopa County Recorder Adrian Fontes. Meanwhile, a judge has set a hearing for Friday to consider how to handle a lawsuit filed by Republican party officials seeking to prevent some late-arriving ballots from being counted in the nail-biter of a Senate race. The suit challenges the way some counties have allowed voters to fix problems involving signatures on some early ballots that were either mailed-in or dropped off at polling sites on Election Day. The lawsuit alleges that signature verification must stop when polls close and seeks an injunction to halt the counting of such ballots that have been verified since then. Fontes said there were cases in which a signature may not match one that is on record, and it is his office's job to determine the validity of the ballot.
