Disney has given the American Red Cross a $1 million grant to fund a national pilot program to teach children what to do in case of an emergency. AmeriCorp volunteers, which is a program of Children First, are teaching students at Vance Elementary School about the American Red Cross Pillowcase Project. They learn what should go inside the case if they ever have to leave their home because of an emergency; like flooding, a fire or even a landslide. The program is designed to ease children's fears about possible disasters. They also teach them about finding their inner strength when they're nervous or scared. The students are also taught what they should tell a dispatcher in case they ever make an emergency phone call. The goal of the national program is to reach all third graders in the next two years. The Pillowcase Project started in New Orleans, when Katrina hit a lot of college students carried their stuff in pillow cases. _______________ Follow WLOS on social media: WLOS ABC 13 News on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/News13/ WLOS ABC 13 News on Twitter: https://twitter.com/WLOS_13 WLOS ABC 13 News on Instagram: https://instagram.com/wlos_13 Subscribe to WLOS on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/ABC13Channel/?sub_confirmation=1 Listen to AnchorMOMS, the Podcast: https://wlos.com/news/anchormoms/anchormoms-the-podcast Watch more top local news stories: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kk8Ge6UXHJs&list=PLkVbaoT-aYbIvnEpR0Ct5QQQqYaORUSUH For all of the day’s top local and national news, visit http://www.wlos.com Watch our live newscasts and other live video at https://wlos.com/watch Have a news tip?
