(8 Nov 2018) A Democratic lawmaker poised to lead the U.S. House of Representatives' powerful tax-writing committee wants to see changes on tax rates for top income earners before endorsing President Donald Trump's campaign promise of giving a 10-percent tax cut to middle-class workers. Massachusetts U.S. Rep. Richard Neal said his Ways and Means Committee will hold hearings on a $1.5 trillion tax cut pushed by Republicans last year -- a move expected to add $1 trillion to the nation's deficit. Neal notes that the tax cut was written in 51 days without public hearings or testimonies from experts. He says Democrats' takeover of the House following this week's midterm elections offers an opportunity for cooperation during a review of the massive tax cut. He plans to invite experts from both sides of the political divide to testify at hearings on the recent tax cut that failed to help Republicans retain control of the House. He notes that the hearings will not lead to a revamp of the tax cut since Democrats only control one half of the legislative arm of the government and Trump still wields veto power over legislation.
