The recent military conflict in Georgia and Russia's recognition of the breakaway provinces of South Ossetia and Abkhazia have sent shock waves through the international community. Germany's foreign minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier has called this one of the most challenging conflicts since the end of the Cold War, while veteran Social Democrat Egon Bahr is urging his successors to avoid an escalation.
