The first thing to strike me when I look at the painting and reference photo side by side is how much lighter in tone the watercolour is. Whilst not necessarily a problem, I maybe could have darkened the trees on the horizon and their reflections a little more. Furthermore, a little Payne’s grey mixed with ultramarine blue would have darkened the corners of the sky to accentuate the light. This could also have been replicated in the water reflections.

Other than that I think I’ve kept fairly loyal to the original image and changed little of the composition. The only element missing from the photo was a focal point so I decided to add a boat. This was included as an afterthought by simply removing the paint with a tissue to reveal the white paper after initially wetting with a clean damp brush.

The shady foreground tree trunks and branches were painted in two layers to achieve the dark tone. Sometimes it may take several washes to achieve the tone you’re looking for but the important thing is to dry the paint between each application. This builds the paint up in layers, getting thicker and thicker on the paper.

There’s a lovely glow on the water between trees and reflections in the photo where the sunlight hits the water. To have achieved the same impact in the painting I would have needed to darken the trees more. 

Tones are most important in a painting. I always stand as far back from the painting as possible when I think I’ve finished. If the tones look right from a distance then the main shapes should be obvious otherwise some adjustment is needed.
