SFSU Budget Cuts Protest on 12/09/09 - Business Building Takeover

On December 9th, 2009, about 20-30 students take over the Business Building on the San Francisco State University main campus in an effort to get the message out against the rising fees and the increasing budget cuts that continue to affect the students education. There have been other similar protests from other colleges in the bay area to rally up support against the decisions of the state capital. Video times of interest: 1:21 3:08 5:10 5:31 Student vs. Student (non-violent) 6:39 Statement of Occupation- Only took some video of this 7:40 Chain of students 7:58 Slide show pictures with students chanting 8:55 Protest as of approx. 3pm I took video of every entrance (about 10:30am) into the building starting with the south entrance, then east, north, and staying mostly at the west entrance where the "Business" sign is @ 1:21. There were students arguing with other students about how to deal with this crisis, some supporting the protesters while others against them saying that their protest is affecting their classes and education. At one point they tried to make a human chain to try and surround the building (7:40). By around 3pm (8:55) the protest lessened to what is seen in the video. On the following morning, police was called in to take back control of the building by breaking a window. There was also an event where some students completely blocked off 19th ave for a short time. By the time classes started on December 10th, the campus returned to normal, with increased security in the Business Building. During the day, there were also multiple fire alarms going off in some of the other buildings. Some believe that the protesters are the ones behind it. The buildings affected that I know of are Burk Hall, Creative Arts, Humanities, and the Science buildings. I am not taking sides on this protest. I understand what each side is protesting and feel that my opinion lies in the center somewhat. I took the video to record this moment in history as one of our generation's hardships, as just a student with a digital camera on hand.
