(Full Title) Real-time Dengue Surveillance: Global Health Learning Across Continents Date: Thursday, May 6th, 2010 Location: Thwing Center Spartan Room at Case Western Reserve Unviersity Panelists: Daniel Tisch, Ronald Blanton Two of the greatest contrasts between the experience in standard classrooms and actual field experiences are the element of the unknown and unpredictable immediate feedback, application of results (or the lack of results), and contact with colleagues. This presentation highlights a recent course jointly taught between CWRU and Federal University of Bahia, Brazil that addressed this gap using a multimedia learning experience to analyze historical and real-time data from the annual dengue endemics and sporadic epidemics in Puerto Rico and Brazil. The information communication technology Adobe Connect® allowed us to: a) Create a single classroom between the UFBa and CWRU, b) Provide an environment for direct interpersonal interaction at the level of gesture and facial expression, c) Permit the students to take advantage of instructors at different institutions with unique and complementary skills, d) Model student interactions with colleagues, e) Prepare students who subsequently apply for CWRU Framework funds to travel to the field sites in the subsequent year, and f) Provide an experience of classroom participation in English for Brazilian students and instructors who are considering continuing their education abroad.
