Over the last century, our planet has seen an exponential increase of waste, triggering very serious climate change. Human activity has led to the creation of a “continent of plastic” in the ocean, and human wastes are a direct cause of global warming. If public awareness has increased, waste management remains a serious concern in all countries and finding a way to reduce our burden on the environment a crucial challenge. But what if it was not all about recycling wastes, but about giving a second life to these objects? What if we could turn what society sees as a used plastic bottle into a work tool, a knife, a piece of art or even a dam?

Jonas Canton is a master student at the university of St Gallen. Besides his studies, he engaged in a volunteering program aiming at bringing a durable and sustainable development in Nicaragua. This notably involved the development of grey water bio filters using local materials and recycled plastic bottle.
